We are proud to say that the wood and paper from
CapeCup and BioAfrica products come from certified
sustainable forests.

What is the FSC®?

The Forest Stewardship Council ® is a foundation founded in 1993 with the mission of countering the deforestation of the Amazon rainforest.

Today, the FSC® is the global standard for sustainable forestry, with over 185 million hectares of forest certified.

What does the FSC® do?

The FSC® ensures that all registered forest plantations adhere to stringent regulations, and only cut down trees according to these rules. Because of this, only a certain part of the FSC® certified forest can be cut down to preserve the natural flora and fauna and honour the people who live and work in these areas.

What are the 10 major FSC® rules and principles?

  • The forestry complies with the national and international laws, treaties, and agreements of the FSC®.
  • Property and usage rights for products derived from the land and forest are clearly defined, noted and legal.
  • The formal and traditional rights of the local inhabitants of the land are acknowledged and respected.
  • Through forest management, the long-term social and economic well-being of the forest workers and local communities is preserved or improved.
  • The products and facilities of the forest are used in a way that protects and preserves the social and ecological functions of the forest.
  • The biodiversity, unique eco-systems and other ecological values of the forest are protected and preserved.
  • A thorough management plan is drawn up and applied. This management plan is always updated and contains a clear description of its long-term goals and resources.
  • Regular assessment of the condition of the forest, harvest, supply chain, management activities, and social and ecological effects.
  • The careful execution of forest management in forests with a high cultural and ecological value, to preserve and reinforce the traits and properties of the area.
  • Forest plantations are to be managed according to principles 1 - 9. Forest plantations can serve as additional wood harvest from natural forests so that the exploitation of those natural forests is slowly decreased, while simultaneously stimulating the preservation and recovery of the natural forests.
